WHAT IS LEGAL TINT IN NC?

When it comes to vehicle tint, it's essential to be aware of the laws and regulations in North Carolina. Let’s review the guidelines to ensure you stay compliant while enjoying the benefits of window tinting.

In North Carolina, there are specific regulations in place to maintain safety and visibility on the roads. The laws regarding vehicle window tinting were enacted in 2001 and are determined by Visible Light Transmission (VLT), which is the percentage of light allowed to pass through the window and into the vehicle.

For passenger vehicles, the VLT must be 35% on all windows. The windshield can only have non-reflective tint along the top 5 inches (AS1 line) and must not be reflective.

For vans, SUVs, and trucks, the forward side windows must also meet the same 35% VLT standard. However, the rear side windows and back windshields can have any darkness of window film, including blackout privacy tint that does not allow a view into the interior of the vehicle at all

If a vehicle has non-factory window tinting, the owner must pay an extra fee to have them checked during North Carolina safety inspections to ensure they meet requirements set by the state.

People with a photosensitivity to light who need darker window tints can apply for a medical exception permit with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles Medical Review Program. These permits are valid for up to five years.

IS WINDOW TINTING A GOOD IDEA?

Need some cool shade from the heat and a defense from prying eyes? Even if you decide not to go over to the dark side with your tinting, there are lots of benefits to having tint put on your car, suv, van, or truck.

Now, let's explore the reasons why vehicle window tinting is a fantastic idea.

First and foremost, tinted windows provide you with enhanced privacy and security. Whether you're driving in the bustling city or parking your car in a public space, tinted windows shield you from prying eyes and add an extra layer of protection.

Moreover, window tinting helps regulate the interior temperature of your vehicle. North Carolina's scorching summers can turn your car into an oven, but with tinted windows, you can keep the interior cool and comfortable.

Tinted windows block harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and protecting your vehicle's upholstery and audio / stereo components from degrading over time.
